About Wolves

Wolves/dogs make us humanMany of my paintings feature wolves, particularly emphasizing the wolf spirit or deva. In some Earth-centered traditions, Wolf is known as teacher. Wolf medicine is about expressing individuality while honoring community.

Because wolf is one of my main totems, or spirit animals, I honor wolf in my paintings and strongly support preservation of wolves and wolf habitat in the wild.

“Dogs Make Us Human,” say the Aborigines of Australia.

In the fascinating book, Animals in Translation, by Temple Grandin and Catherine Johnson, there is an essay about the influence of wolves (from which our dogs evolved) on the evolution of early humans.

According to recent anthropological research, humans wouldn’t be what we are today if we hadn’t developed in close relationship with wolves. It appears that early humans learned to hunt in cooperative groups from wolves. Our complex social structures are patterned after those of wolf packs.  We also learned to be territorial and to have same-sex friends. In fact, in many ways we learned to be a lot more like wolves than we are like our fellow primates!

Even more amazing is the fact that the human brain got smaller at the same time we began living with wolves! The part that shrank “…was the mid-brain, which handles emotions and sensory data, and the olfactory bulbs, which handle smell…” “In all of the domestic animals [including dogs] the fore-brain, which holds the frontal lobes, and the corpus callosum, which is the connecting tissue between the two sides of the brain” is the part that shrank. So, according to Temple Grandin, “Dog brains and human brains specialized: humans took over the planning and organizing tasks, and dogs took over the sensory tasks. Dogs and people co-evolved and became even better partners, allies, and friends.”

Next time you hear the saying, “Dogs are man’s best friend,” you might want to stop and say thank you to the pooch in your life – and to all the wolves who contributed to our human development!
